Alcoholism Is A Vicious Disease

We never hear about Alcoholism anymore. Why is that?

Has it become ignored like it was years ago?

It can and will destroy the lives that surround the alcoholic if they do not get help.

I was brought up in an alcoholic household. My Father was one. And he was also a mean alcoholic. He beat-up my Mom and Brother. Never did that to me. Mom would call the local police and they would ask her, "What did YOU do to make him this pissed-off?" "Did you have an affair?" Then they would take him up to the Long Island Expressway which was about 15 miles from our home and make him walk back. He never got arrested each time Mom would call them. This was back in the 70's and I was under 10 years old.

When I was 14 he "quit" drinking but never got help from Alcoholics Anonymous. He wasn't as mean as he was, but still on the mean side. As I got older I realized he drank for a multitude of reasons and alcohol was his way of "dealing" with it. Stuffing it away deep inside.

He was abused and neglected as child. One year he was given only coal in his stocking for Christmas. I can only imagine what that alone did to him. His parents owned a lot of bars in Scotland and they were not hurting for money so to put coal in his stocking is just incomprehensible. Back then, it was acceptable.

He was always putting us down just to make himself feel better even when he stopped drinking. I told him he needed to go AA because he still has the "ism" of alcohol. Of course he didn't listen to me. Then he would wonder why no one talked to him.

I do not know how we all physically survived his disease. There were times he would drive us in the car while he was falling-down-drunk. We had angels with us. What else could it be?

As I was turning 19, I had a huge birthday party. I drank everything and anything that was there. Yes, I mixed drinks. To top it all off, I had 2 shots of Zambuca. That was it. I was so sick I probably came close to alcohol poisoning. It was so bad that for 3 years I couldn't drink orange juice because I could swear there was Vodka in it. I never touched alcohol since that party. I can't stand it to this day.

Statistically, my Brother and I should be alcoholics. We never became that. Not sure why he never did, but for me, I think the drinking binge I went on was meant to be. It was meant as a warning and I heeded it. Thanks to the Powers that be.

If you know someone that needs help, do all you can to get them help. If you have children living in the household, find a way to get them and yourself out of that environment. It will affect them for the rest of their lives if they have to grow-up with continuing alcoholism and they could end up with that addicition, or worse.
