Buying Or Selling A Home On Long Island: Local Is As Local Does!
Whether you are selling or buying a home, staying local when it comes to hiring professionals is the best way to go.
- Your first step is to interview local real estate agents. Auntie Matilda who is a real estate agent 50 miles away isn't going to cut it. A local real estate agent knows the market and will be available more often than Auntie.
- Get pre-approved for a mortgage by a local lender. Your real estate agent most likely will have reliable and professional in-house lenders for you to go to. The agents know their mortgage people inside and out and if they refer a few to you, talk to them and pick one! Get at least 2 opinions for mortgages so you know where you stand before you go out and house hunt!
- Hire a local real estate attorney. This sounds like common sense but you would be surprised when someone is shocked that they can't use a friend or relative that is out of state because that attorney is not licensed in New York to practice law. If you are buying a condo or a co-op, it's best to use an attorney who is well-versed with this type of housing.
- Title Insurance Company. Most likely, your real estate attorney will use their company to do the title search. Did you know you have a choice about this? Find out how much that person will charge and compare it to others. It's your money, not theirs.
Remember, when it comes to real estate, keep it local. It will better serve you now and in the long run!
