Hurricane Irene Update for Long Island
8/31/11:
8/29/11: As of today, LIPA has stated that it will have 90% of the power restored to Long Island by Friday, September 2nd.
According to the Weather Channel on Cablevision, Hurricane Irene could pack 85MPH winds by the time she hits the Western part of Long Island. 85 MPH is nothing to sneeze at. We could lose power, we may not. Don't gamble.
I am seeing reports online that Hurricane Irene has weakened. Yes she has. She is down to 105 MPH. Still, that doesn't mean she will weaken more. Hurricanes are like tornadoes. They go wherever they want when they want. They could weaken, or get stronger. They can turn in another direction at the last minute. Hurricane Irene is 450 miles wide and is slow moving.
I am finding most stores are out of bottled water. The lines at the gas stations are long. Remember the gas shortage in the 70's? Well, today is reminiscent of that time.
Stock-up on the following:
Buy a cooler or two and put ice in them when the power goes out. Make your own ice if you find the stores are out of stock.
Buy Brita water filters if you have a Brita water system
Fill up on gas for your car
Buy batteries, flashlights and candles
Buy at least another gas container for your gas grills. You can cook many foods on them unless you want to live on cheese and crackers :)
If your cell phone battery dies while we are out of power, charge it up with your car. You can do this without turning your car on. Even if it's for a few minutes. You need a working phone for emergencies.
If you live on or near the water, go to higher ground. Stay with family and friends if you have to. If you stay home, you can't stop the water from going into your home anyway.
I've been through Hurricanes Belle, Gloria and Bob. All three times we lost power for over a week including Bob. Hurricane Bob hit the Eastern end of Long Island 20 years ago. I live in Western Suffolk County and still had no power for over a week.
So please, it's better to be safe than sorry.
