Long Island Real Estate - Home Buyers - Buy Or Walk Away?

I decided to hit the clearance racks at Marshalls last weekend. It's been very cold out with high winds and I was determined to find a great parking spot! I go halfway down one aisle and saw a spot. Hmmm, I think I could do better so I went around to the next aisle and didn't find one close enough. I circle back to the first aisle I was in and that spot I originally found, was gone. So, here I am circling around, wasting gas just to find THE best spot near Marshall's since I didn't want to walk in the extremely cold weather. I ended up settling for a spot farther away all because I let go of the better one I first found earlier. I should have taken that one. But, woulda, shoulda, coulda.
Then I thought searching for a parking spot is similar to searching for a home.
How many of you found a home that didn't have that 4th bedroom but had a loft area that could be turned into a 4th bedroom or maybe even an office? Or what about the house you liked that had 2 bathrooms instead of 3? How many bathrooms do you need really? I did the same thing years ago when I bought my first home.
See my point? No? Here is my point. You didn't buy because you thought you were settling when in fact it would really work as you look back on it. Someone else bought it because they saw the value and the potential for some reason you couldn't see. Just like me driving around in circles looking for that "perfect" spot, you do the same thing for your home search.
Buying a home is the largest investment you will make in your life. It's good to look at homes to see what you like or dislike. Do not discount the little nuances that can be fixed later. No house is perfect. Nothing in life is perfect. Unless you are going to build a house from the ground up, you will not find everything you are looking for in a house.
Make a list of your needs and wants. Really look at the Want side of the list. Be honest with yourself and cross off the things that are really not important. Most people find that they can live without the Wants and then they focus on the needs. When yo do this, you will not drive in circles searching for that "perfect home".
When you are not serious about buying a home, you'll never make an offer because you are looking at too many houses and driving yourself nuts. Searching for THE house is supposed to be fun for the most part. If it isn't, what is the sense doing it to begin with?
And, I did find some great deals at Marshalls so it was worth walking further for!
