Just When You Think Your Teenagers Aren't Listening.........
I was in the car with my son and we got onto the subject of having kids and being a parent. I told him I love being a Mom and how lucky I am to have a son who is good. He doesn't get into trouble and beats to his own drum. I told him in a world where peer pressure is high, he has his head on his shoulders and I am proud of him for that.
Then I get the, "Mom, you are embarrassing me". I tell him that he will know what it feels like he has kids. Then he says it, "Are you nuts? I'm not having kids!". So I tell him you don't have to. "There are no rules. But, tell me, why do you feel this way?".................
"We are going to die next year (2012 - I laughed at this one), gas prices are going up, it's expensive to rent here, cost of living is not cheap". "I won't be able to afford a wife and kids!"
I told him this is why you need to go to college so you can afford to live here. So you can have kids if you choose to. So you can choose to live on Long Island if you want to. It's all about choices. If you make the right decision and go to college, you will have the choice to live here or not. That is up to you. Try to have no regrets in life.
"Yeah, I know".
What impressed me the most is he is aware of what is really going on in the world. He is too young to drive and he knows gas prices have gone up here. I also realize that he does listen and knows what is going on around him.
It's up to us parents to guide our kids and help them make the right decisions about and for their future.
