Friday Photos - Spring Has Sprung In West Babylon!

Last year we had dandellions. This year, we have these yellow "flowers". I have no idea what they are but they make for a pretty ground cover. It's finally Spring here and long awaited at that! I've been done with Winter since it started, lol.

Mourning Dove Babies Were Born And Have Flown The Coop

Mourning Dove Babies Were Born And Have Flown The Coop

On March 21st, I wrote about Mourning Doves Nesting At Our Front Door.

They were both born last week and as of yesterday, have flown the coop but not without issues. Geeze, even birds have issues, lol.

Earlier this week I noticed the 2 babies by themselves in the nest. Mama was nowhere to be found. Wednesday the babies were on the ground. I guess they didn't get the hang of flying yet. I was concerned of course since we have a few stray cats that lurk around.

Yesterday morning I saw mama with her babies on the ground just below the tree where the nest is. So I watched from my window and before you know it, mama and her 2 babies flew away. I guess mama came back to teach them what to do. I'm glad the babies didn't become a cat's dinner.

I was hoping to do a video of them being born but that never happened. You have to watch something like that constantly and with my schedule, it made it impossible. There is always next year!

Here are photos that I've been taking since last week:

This is Mama.

This is Mama with one of her babies. We thought only 1 was born but the other one is somewhere in the nest.

2 babies here.

2 babies here too.

Both babies on the ground. This was taken yesterday.

This baby started to fly but was still unsteady. Banged into the walls of our house and landed on the railing.

It's amazing how fast they grow!

Seven Deadly Home Inspection Sins

A good home inspector is worth their weight in gold. Please direct your comments to Jay as I have disabled commenting on this post.

Via Jay Markanich (Jay Markanich Real Estate Inspections, LLC):

Every industry has its no no's.  Home inspecting as a profession is no different.

Certainly, no list of anything is definitive, but can I suggest seven deadly things a home inspector can do?

  1. MISINTERPRET - Home inspecting is about gathering information.  It is very important that the information one gathers is correctly interpreted.  A leak stain can sometimes come from many different things.  A stain in an upstairs bedroom ceiling might manifest in one spot, but the source can be far away.  Or it might be an exploded soda can!  Tools, like a Thermal Infrared Camera, can reveal colors that may or may not indicate a problem.  A home inspector has to be thoroughly trained in many things and understand many industries in order to properly interpret a finding during an inspection.
  2. MISUNDERSTAND - Closely related to the first sin, things aren't always as they appear.  What you see might not be what you get.  But very important - the client is the process during a home inspection.  It is very important to understand the client's needs and concerns.  And clients aren't always as understanding of what they see or what the inspector says as a home inspector might think, so communication is crucial.  Communication is a two-way avenue.
  3. MISTAKE - Even something as small as a typo on the report can become something big.  Words mean things and so, during the inspection, what is said must be said properly.  That "sump pump" might be an "ejector pump" for the bathroom, and has to be explained for what it is.  If the amperage is not stated clearly on the panel box or main breaker, be sure what is said to be the amperage is correct.  Which leads to the next sin:
  4. MISSTATE - one very important aspect of a home inspection is what happens after wards.  The report is probably one third of the home inspection (after construction knowledge and client education).  It has to be right.  It has to be understandable.  It has to accurately describe what it is trying to convey.  Be sure that when something is an inspector's opinion, it is expressed as such and/or reported the same.  Like it says above, words mean things, so the proper words and proper wording is essential.  And we inspectors put down our reports electronically and on paper for all to see and for all time.  It has to be right.
  5. MISQUOTE - Again referring to the report, if an inspector is going to quote a code, or a phrase from a manual and cite the reference, it has to be correct.  References to websites or other URLs have to be exact!  Some builders are getting finicky and are requiring a code reference to be included in the report when something on their house is cited by an outside inspector.  I notice they don't require that of the County Inspector, but that is just me.
  6. MISREPRESENT - An inspector needs to truthfully state who he is, what his certifications are, his licensing agencies or organizations.  If not, that is something that will bite quickly and hard.  His appearance and professionalism should also represent who he is, reflect well on his industry and even the Realtor who referred him!  An inspector wants to be referred to others and be called on again and again.  We are all missionaries for something and certainly professionalism should be one of those things we convey!
  7. MISS - Nobody is 100%.  No where and no how.  But, unfortunately, a home inspector is expected to be!  Don't miss anything!  Anything!  Sometimes a little thing can blow up to become a bigger-than-it-needs-to-be thing.  There is always somebody looking to blame others for whatever happens later and a home inspector has a big target on the back of his logo-festooned shirt!  Most people are in their house for a long time.  So don't miss anything!  This is a very hard sin not to commit however...

My recommendation:  While this might not be THE definitive list of seven home inspector sins, it sure is a good start!  These lists could go on for a while.  After all, this list just describes the M's!!  If any of these seven sins is a problem for you, may I suggest sincere repentance and a change of heart or mind.  Seek out an industry professional in the know and learn how corrections can be made!  And let's be careful out there!

South Bay Elementary School In West Babylon Needs Your Help!

South Bay Elementary School In West Babylon Needs Your Help!

My husband received this email from someone in his running group that is coordinating donations:

Hi All

Many of you have heard about the West Babylon school fire. The k-5 South Bay Elementary School was destroyed. It appears that books from one Kindergarten classroom may recovered.

We are fortunate that no one was hurt and classes will resume tomorrow at The Our lady of Grace Church.

I am reaching out to everyone, especially my teaching colleagues, for donations of classroom supplies (for students and teachers), books, games, phys ed "stuff", "music stuff".

I know that we all contribute to various causes on a regular basis so please don't feel obligated.

Lightly used "stuff" is fine. This may be a good time to purge the kids bookshelves.

I can be reached at home 631-484-6859, cell 631-484-6859

at The West Babylon HS 631-376-7100 vm 7967

I live in the area and can easily coordinate a pick up.

Thank you as always,

Dana

West Babylon Sunrise

West Babylon Sunrise......

Both photos were taken outside my front door. Sometimes, the tree looks like it's on fire but today it wasn't as dramatic and the clouds quickly covered the sun soon after these photos were taken.

South Bay Elementary School In West Babylon Ravaged by Fire

South Bay Elementary School In West Babylon Ravaged by Fire

Last night a fire destroyed 2 of 3 wings of this beloved elementary school that educates 400 children, Kindergarten through 5th grade. It continued to rage for 6 hours into the wee hours of the morning today.

A gas line exploded in the cafeteria and the boiler room may be to blame.

It is not clear if the children will attend that school come this Monday.

A volunteer fire-woman, Christine Manzi, teaches at the South Bay Elementary School and has said, "there will be a "big adjustment" for children and adults alike. She said the classroom is a teacher's "world," and contains things that can't be replaced.

A new library was built in the school recently. Since this school is only a few blocks from where I live, I was able to pass it and the outside of the building in the front looked fine. I can't even imagine what it looks like on the inside right now.

The one saving grace to all this? The school is closed this week for Winter break. It's times like these that we have angels or some other outside force watching out for us.

I was able to catch the Channel 2 News helicopter that was hovering overhead of our house:

Mystic Elements Florist & Gifts West Babylon New York

Mystic Elements Florist & Gifts West Babylon New York

My husband surprised me last night with this beautiful floral arrangement of roses! Thank you honey :)

He purchased them at Mystic Elements Florist & Gifts in West Babylon. They are located at 419C Great East Neck Road.

I've always been impressed with them. The owner is very meticulous when it comes to choosing the flowers and the arranging. I've never seen a nicer presentation ever! My husband buys me flowers often and Mystic Elements is the best florist by far.

She even tells you how to take care of them by changing the water, cutting the stems, etc. She cares a great deal about your purchase.

The roses in the picture are so gorgeous wiht rows and rows of petals. She puts in the right amount of baby's breath and then wraps the arrangement in cellophane and tied it off with a beautiful hot pink organza ribbon.

Mystic Elements also does wedding and funeral arrangements.

No matter what the occasion is, you can be assured that the owner will take great care of you and your floral needs.
