Thanksgiving is a wonderful time. We get together with family and friends we haven't seen in a while. We cook, we eat, we laugh. We even laugh together while cleaning off the table and doing dishes. My fondest memories are of watching my Aunt, Mom and their Sister clean up and do the dishes while reminiscing their childhood. Oh the things they would say! They would also talk about their Brother who passed away a few days before Thanksgiving in 2001. He was a good man and I miss him also.
As we all have fun together, think about a person or you may know who needs a little help this Thanksgiving. So many people are out of work and scramble to keep a roof over their heads, other bills to be paid and food on the table. If you know someone who is having a hard time, invite them over to share your Thanksgiving dinner and desert. Or, if you know an older person who spends the holiays alone or is home bound, bring over a plate of hot food for them and a bottle of sparkling cider.
If you have children that go to school with another child who is in need, maybe invite him or her and their family to sit down with you for that day.
Volunteer with your family that day to help out at a soup kitchen.
What am I doing this year to help someone out? There is a homeless man I see around here so I'm hoping I'll be able to find him that day and give him a hot plate of food. There are no soup kitchens near my home so I do not think he'll be able to have a decent dinner that day and I know he doesn't get one every day. He works hard. He walks around with a shopping cart and collects bottles and cans. Then he goes to Stop N Shop and cashes them in then buys some food and something to drink (non-alcoholic). I've seen him do this so that is how I know. I make sure to have a bag of bottles and cans for him when I see him which is not that often and he is always very grateful for it.
No matter what you do that Thanksgiving Day, try and make that day special for someone and go to bed that night knowing you did something to help.

Jackie, We just helped on a Habitat for Humanity home. It was a wonderful project and I love giving back. It's sad so many people need help of food or just kindness on special days like Thanksgiving.
Hi Carole! I want to do that project too! LIBOR (Long Island Board of Realtors) does that also a few times a year I believe so I'm waiting for the next one.
And you are right about how a lot of people only get help a few days a year. Sad doesn't even begin to cover it!
And thanks for wading through all the other blogs to get to this one and comment :)
There are so many projects around to help people at Thanksgiving and Christmas, it makes really easy to help.
We also have several avenues to provide help all year long, which is super important.
Yes Judi, the help all year long is super important! People can do only what they can afford to do. I say if you do not have the money to help, then give your time :)
Jackie, Several times I have joined with one of my friends to prepare 100 sack lunches. We spend the night before and the morning of a holiday. Then we take them and hand them out to the homeless in Las Vegas. It is amazing how much it means to them to get a sandwich, some fruit, chips, candy and a soda. I'll be in Wyoming this year so that won't work -- but I will think of something. Your post had some great ideas.
Gary what an awesome thing! And great idea! I'm sure you will think of something to do in Wyoming. My cousin lives there and is a police officer with the Green River Police Dept. :)
